GEEKS KICKOFF 2010 HOCKEY TOURNAMENT WITH A “FOCUS” ON YOUTH

Moncton, nb, March 30, 2010: Geeks on Ice are gearing up for their seventh annual charitable hockey tournament. Since 2003, the tournament has attracted IT professionals to the Moncton area to play in a three-day event which raises money to invest in initiatives that help reduce the impact of the digital divide. Since its inception, the tournament has raised more than $30,000 to help build computer labs and make other technology upgrades for local non-profit organizations.

This year’s tournament will take place in Dieppe from April 23-25th at the Arthur J. LeBlanc Centre and feature geek skaters from IT organizations like T4G Limited, Speilo and Gogii Games. The public is welcome to attend the games and related special events.

For 2010, Geeks on Ice has chosen to team up with Future Focus Foundation, the philanthropic arm of T4G Limited. It is a registered charity with the Canada Revenue Agency.

With a regional office in Moncton, T4G is pleased that Future Focus is partnering in a project that has demonstrated a high social return on investment. The executive director, Andrew Sifton, is “delighted at the idea of overcoming the digital divide”. The foundation’s mandate is to “help children succeed” in communities across Canada and it is pleased to be supporting an event that will benefit the community of Greater Moncton.

“It is our core belief that every child deserves a chance to succeed,” said Geeks on Ice founder Trevor MacAusland. “The digital divide has created a barrier for troubled youth who see a career in the ICT sector as a way out. Our goal is to bridge this divide and make that dream a reality.”

Mr. MacAusland says the initiative is garnering support from regional IT companies. Geeks on Ice and Future Focus Foundation will be working with the Greater Moncton and Southeastern NB Region United Way to identify which projects in the Greater Moncton area will receive the funding.

Geeks on Ice would like to thank their sponsors T4G Limited, Magnetic Hill Holiday Inn Express and Mooser's Pub & Eatery for their support as well as the Greater Moncton and Southeastern NB Region United Way for their past and current support as a local community partner.

TJ: Geeks on Ice looking to welcome the world to Moncton by 2012

Melissa Dunne
For the Telegraph-Journal
Published Monday March 10th, 2008
Appeared on page B1
A world hockey tournament for "geeks" could be coming to Moncton by 2012.

Trevor MacAusland, founder of the annual high-tech industry hockey tournament Geeks on Ice, aims to grow the provincial event into a global phenom.

Over the next five years Geeks on Ice, which started as a regional event in the Hub City in 2003, is set to become a unique, global tournament, similar to the World Pond Hockey Championship held in Plaster Rock every year, says the 28-year-old founder.

Celebrating its fifth year in 2008, after taking 2004 off, Geeks on Ice has already grown from a regional tournament attracting less than a hundred players to signing up about 300 players for this year's charity tournament.

Geeks on Ice would like to thank its 2008 sponsors the City of Moncton, Enterprise Greater Moncton and Molson Breweries.

21 leaders for the 21st century 2008

Original '21' aim to create the capacity for change by developing the nation's best community leaders

Moncton, NB - Together with Premier Shawn Graham, 21inc. today launched a province-wide search for 21 enthusiastic and energetic young New Brunswickers to participate in its renewed 21 leaders for the 21st century program - a unique leadership development exercise designed to give new and emerging leaders the tools, networks and confidence to help advance New Brunswick's self-sufficiency agenda.

Born of UNB's NextNB: 21 leaders for the 21st century initiative, 21inc. is a not-for-profit organization committed to creating the capacity for change in New Brunswick by developing the best community leaders in Canada.

Established in 2006 by the original group of 21 leaders, 21inc. Executive Director Tim Coates said: "The 21 leaders experience offered us considerable attention and encouragement. We want to offer other young New Brunswickers the same chance we had to broaden our networks and gain a deeper understanding of our province and its challenges."

Participants in the 2008 21 leaders for the 21st century program will have the opportunity to meet with - and learn from - established provincial and national leaders; accelerate their leadership development by designing and implementing community solutions projects and, importantly, join a dynamic and diverse network of engaged young New Brunswickers committed to their province, and its future.

The 2008 class will be selected by an inter-disciplinary panel of judges. Applicants will be chosen based on a combination of criteria, including: their vision; their academic, professional and extra-curricular contributions; and for their capacity to have an impact on the province and its people. Application guidelines and more detailed program information are available at www.21inc.ca.

"Achieving the kind of large scale transformation we're seeking for New Brunswick means identifying, cultivating and enlisting our next generation of leaders," said the Honourable Shawn Graham, Premier of New Brunswick, acknowledging 21inc. as the first link in this new network of emerging leaders. He said, "21inc.'s 21 leaders for the 21st century program closes an important gap - instilling in our young people a sense of opportunity, community and responsibility here, in New Brunswick. Thanks to 21inc.'s efforts, our province will have a forever-growing pool of promising young people working to ensure New Brunswick remains the kind of place where people want to live, study, invest and raise families."

21inc. is supported by the Government of New Brunswick, the University of New Brunswick, Revolution Strategy, Caisses populaires acadiennes, Major Drilling, Mariner Partners, McCain Foods, Moosehead Breweries, Diversis and the Barrett Corporation.

Event photos and interviews with members of 21inc. and the original '21 leaders' are available.

Geeks on Ice Cybersocial Summary

Geeks on Ice readies the community to face-off against the digital divide

Last night I had the privilege to share a sneak peek of the new Geeks on Ice vision at the monthly Cybersocial. We shared the list of symptoms many non-profit agencies in our region face due to the digital divide. For those who are not familiar with the term digital divide, it is best described as the gap between those with physical access to technology hardware and, more broadly, skills and resources which allow for its use and those without this access.

Attendees heard me explain how Geeks on Ice have invested in hardware and software upgrades, however; without the access to professional expertise these agencies struggle to maximize the full extent of the equipment we provide. Digital illiteracy is crippling to organizations that have to correspond, collaborate and request funding through the electronic forum of the participation age.

To respond to an obvious gap to the Geeks on Ice mandate, our vision committee reinvented the mission to purchase computer equipment and software using funds raised through the annual hockey tournament, offer professional expertise to member agencies and promote community collaboration. In short, Geeks on Ice will not stop skating until the digital divide is eliminated!

In order to fill the need for professional expertise, the United Way of Greater Moncton and Southeastern NB was on hand to collect names of volunteers ready to be Geek Warriors who will serve on the front lines in our battle to defeat the digital divide in our communities. These heroes, individuals and organizations, will provide a few hours of their time to lend their professional expertise to local member agencies.

Participants were also very enthusiastic to hear that Geeks on Ice wants to see the group of volunteers evolve into a formal committee which will work towards the creation of a Geek University where not only the non-profit sector benefits from workshops and mentoring, but where small to medium sized organizations can also participate in the process to help our entire economy overcome the challenges caused by the digital divide.

If you are interested in learning more about the Geek Warriors or Geeks on Ice, please send all inquiries to geeksonice@gmail.com.

"In our most recent survey, launch32 companies to date have created over 300 jobs, an exciting example of true growth as we continue to build the foundation for a local ecosystem of innovation, collaboration, and growth" said Jeff Roach, Executive Director of Catalict, the propelsj technology accelerator launched in October.

About Open Ocean Systems
Open Ocean Systems Inc. (OOSI) is pursuing a strategic market opportunity focused on the deployment of breakthrough cage containment and farming systems technology within the emerging Open Ocean Aquaculture sector.

Founded in November of 2005, Open Ocean Systems Inc. is a knowledge based company with a global reach and outlook. Based in Saint John, OOSI is totally focused on export markets. Company founder, Andrew Storey, has many years of experience in the international and local aquaculture sectors and is confident that the timing and its technology will meet the challenges of this new environment.

Aquaculture has been an extremely successful method of producing food and now supplies over 30% of the world's seafood consumption. Population and per capita consumption increases as well as other factors are expected to push this to over 50% over the next 15 years, creating both challenges and opportunities for the sector.

Within that farmed seafood sector, the open ocean aquaculture (OOA) sector (which can best be described as marine fish farming activities outside of sheltered coastal areas) is anticipated to grow at an exponential rate over the next decade with billions of dollars in infrastructure and technology expenditures required to fuel this growth. While challenging, the ability to farm within this environment presents a number of benefits, opening up a huge potential pasture from which to meet future seafood demand in a sustainable fashion.

In 2007, the company will be carrying out Beta tests focused on commercializing its first generation products. Longer term, the system will be further developed past this first generation with technology and ICT overlays that, taken to its conclusion, will create an automated biomass management and farming system with the company providing the operating system as well as the containment system in a seamless integration of hardware and software. The company is employing "rapid prototyping" technology to meet these aggressive goals.
