Tournament Dates Announced

Press Release: December 15, 2005

Moncton, New Brunswick -- The 2006 Geeks On Ice (GOI) Committee is pleased to announce the dates for the 2006 tournament – Friday, April 21- Sunday, April 23 at the Tim Horton’s 4-Ice Centre in Moncton, New Brunswick.

The goal of Geeks on Ice is to serve as a networking catalyst and promotion for knowledge industry firms and professionals from all over the region. The unique focus of GOI is the fact that each team must consist of players who work in an IT related profession either in IT, insurance, banking, contact centers or businesses that specialize in the transfer of knowledge. Participating teams have included Xerox, Spielo, Whitehill Technologies, CGI, Assomption Vie, Sports Direct, Plexus, and the IT division of HRDC.

“We are very proud of the success of the previous two tournaments in attracting IT hockey teams to Moncton,” says Trevor MacAusland, tournament founder. “Last year we had twelve teams of over 200 knowledge industry professionals from around Atlantic Canada compete in the four-day event. Teams from Saint John, Moncton, Halifax and Fredericton represented the region. Our goal was to promote networking between IT firms and to raise money for the community.”

A total of $1650.00 was raised in April 2005 over the four-day event and sponsored a Relay for Life team. For 2006, the tournament committee has chosen to sponsor Support to Single Parents (www.supporttosingleparents.ca), a non-profit organization established in 1982 with a mandate to improve the quality of life for single parents and their children. The goal this year is to raise enough money to outfit the charity with new computers and peripherals.

The popularity of the tournament has created a solid reputation among the IT community; the tournament has expanded for the third year in a row, to 16 team spaces available for 2006.

Teams interested in registering should contact Michael Nied, Tournament Logistics Chair at mnied@whitehilltech.com, or download the registration form from www.geeksonice.com.

Adult recreational tournaments are an important reason we built the only 4-plex east of Quebec. The additional tourism in shoulder seasons presented by this tournament is appreciated. These guys should be treated like `virtual' kings for coming here, I wish them luck!

The Geeks on Ice Tournament is a great complement to other networking activities such as Rising Stars and Cybersocials. My view is that the Knowledge Industry in Atlantic Canada will get stronger as we get to know each other better. Congratulations are extended to Trevor MacAusland and the organizing committee. Good luck to all participants. Finally and with obvious bias: Go Whitehill Go!

Knowledge and High-tech Industries have been identified by The Province of New Brunswick as a key growth area. This tournament is a novel way for the Knowledge Industry across the Atlantic Provinces to come together." She continues, "It provides a venue for forging new business linkages. What a great example of how regional working groups such as the Greater Moncton Knowledge Industry are finding innovative ways of stimulating the industry.

The tournament was very well run, our hats of to Whitehill Technologies, and Trevor Macausland, for organizing it. Moncton's "Tim Horton's 4 Ice Center" is the perfect location and took care of all our needs - hockey, food, and refreshments, and entertainment.
