Geeks Score a Big Goal for Local Charity
Moncton Crescent MLA John Betts presented the Whitehill Cup to the winners. Assomption Vie had to fend off some stiff competition in order to make their way into the history books. No team has ever won the Whitehill Cup more then once in the four year history of the tournament before today. It was a great day for the Moncton based team who also saw the Business New Brunswick Tournament MVP award going to Serge Bourgeois.
The title of The Rising Stars Most Generous Team award went to Services Canada for the third straight year with a whopping $477.00 donation to the United Way. AOL came in second with $370.00 and Xwave/Aliant was third with $309.00. Another notable mention goes to Whitehill Technologies who set bar as a great corporate citizen by making a $1000.00 contribution to kick-off the charitable campaign.
Moncton City Councilor, Merrill Henderson kicked off the tournament with the official puck drop on Friday evening. Aliant/Xwave, Assomption Vie, Canada Post, Whitehill Technologies, Services Canada, YourTeamOnlice.ca, Dovico, Minacs, Speilo, All in Canada, AOL and CGI are some of the organizations which participated in the annual weekend tournament.
Besides playing hockey, the geeks promoted health and wellness and networked with their peers while raising some serious cash to help local agencies upgrade their computer equipment.
Geeks on Ice would like to thank its sponsors Whitehill Technologies, G4 Tech TV, Career Beacon, Dooly’s, Molson, Rising Stars, NRC, Business New Brunswick, Atlantic Provinces Chambers of Commerce, Aliant and YourTeamOnline.ca for making the tournament a memorable one.

With the tournament beginning tomorrow, we want to remind everyone of the beer policy at the Tim Hortons 4Ice Center.
All beer and alcohol must be purchased from Slapshots, the facility’s restaurant. The restaurant could lose their liquor license if any team brings beer or alcohol into the facility.
Any team that violates this policy will be asked to leave the tournament and may not be allowed back in future tournaments. Management can also shut down the tournament.
The facility will provides delivery service of ice cold beer to your dressing room.
You can order your beverage prior to your game for delivery to your dressing room at the end of your game. All orders must be prepaid.
Slapshots is a full service restaurant that offers buffet breakfasts as well as excellent meal service.
Thank you for participating, enjoy your time with us and we hope to see you next year.
If you have comments or suggestions for the Geeks on Ice tournament committee, please inform our tournament or registration chairperson, or any member of the Geeks on Ice Committee.

Before you hit the ice...
The GOI 2007 tournament rules are now available here: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dgzwdj7h_103dn4gpd
A couple of highlights and for those of you who participated in last year’s tournament a few changes:
- All referees decisions are final - NO PROTESTS
- There is no Centre Red Line.
- No Contact.
- Slap Shots, where the stick starts above the waist, are not allowed. Referees will immediately blow the whistle to stop the play; and a face-off will be taken in the offending team’s zone.
- Under NO circumstances is outside alcohol permitted in the dressing rooms. Beer can be purchased at the facility and delivered to your room after your game. If any team violates this rule, the facility will ban your team from further competition and the committee will not reimburse your registration fee.
Also, for your information, here is a copy of the GOI 2007 waiver form: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dgzwdj7h_105gw5wdf
It is mandatory that every member of your team, player or coach, sign the waiver; otherwise they will not be permitted to participate or take the ice.
For convenience, we will bring copies to the arena for everyone to complete so you needn’t bring them with you. This was only meant to give you a prior heads up to the requirement.
the tournament in the manner that it was intended.
We understand that Hockey is the best game in the world.
I know there will be some outstanding play making witnessed over the four days.
Please remember not to take it too seriously.

Local Entrepreneurs Turn Passion for Sports into Business
“The Foundation’s investment is an integral key to advancing our product nationally and internationally” said Chris Nadeau, President of YourTeam Online. “NBIF has provided our company with the capital that we require to advance our marketing and sales efforts, and take the company to the next level of growth.”
“The company has been successful in attracting early users and this investment will enable the firm to more rapidly reach the marketplace,” commented Calvin Milbury, NBIF Vice President of Business Development. YourTeam Online is a prime example of the type of company we seek to support under our Seed Equity Fund.”
Since YourTeam Online first unveiled its product to the local hockey community in the fall of 2006, it has grown steadily and now has over 250 teams signed up on www.yourteamonline.ca. The company plans to use the NBIF investment to expand its product offering into other sports.

Local Geeks Lace up for Charity
April 16, 2007
The Moncton based team will have to beat out 15 other cup thirsty teams from across Atlantic Canada in order to make their way into the history books. No team has ever repeated as champion in the four year history of the tournament. Ken Leblanc, CEO of Property Guys, has gone on record to say that his team is ready to take on all challengers.
Ken has a reason to be confident. On a recent visit to Moncton, Hockey Night in Canada celebrity Ron MacLean filmed an interview for GeeksonIce.com where he was asked to comment on Property Guys chances of a repeat. Without hesitation, MacLean picked Property Guys to go home with the hardware again this year.
Whitehill Technologies, Aliant/Xwave, Assomption Vie, Canada Post, Service Canada, YourTeamOnlice.ca, Dovico, Minacs, Speilo, All in Canada, AOL and CGI are some of the organizations participating in this year’s tournament featuring close to 300 players.
Besides playing hockey, Geeks will look to promote health and wellness, network with their peers and raise some serious cash in partnership with the United Way of Greater Moncton and Southeastern NB Region.
“This tournament is unique because it replaces traditional corporate environments with a casual atmosphere where social networking can take place,” explained Trevor MacAusland committee Co-Chair, “at the end of the day; it is about going out, having fun and doing something really cool for our community.”
In order for everyone to embrace their ‘Inner Geek’, there will be a GeekFest on Saturday Night, April 21st from 8 – 12 p.m. for people to participate without the skates! Dooly’s on Main Street will host the evening complete with billiards, Hockey Night in Canada, good times and prizes. Geeks of all kinds, players, organizers, supporters, IT professionals and Hockey Fans are invited.
Games will run for four days with the championship game taking place on Sunday at 1PM. If you would like to see the full schedule and or get more information contact geeksonice@gmail.com or go to http://www.geeksonice.com/.

Teams: Geeks so Nice
I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your support of Geeks on Ice and wanted to express how much I am looking forward to meeting each of you in approximately 15 days. Geeks is not your traditional hockey tournament.
Our participants participate in Geeks on Ice for three reasons: To promote health and wellness within the IT industry; to promote networking between peers and knowledge industry firms from all over Atlantic Canada; to raise funds for the purchase of computers, peripherals and software for non-profit organizations.
Holding true to our mision, I am writing to you in relation to our last goal of raising funds for non-profit organizations. Last year, our tournament managed to raise close to $7000.00 for Support to Single Parents. This investment by the Geeks community has enabled SFSP to deliver valuable services to hundreds of individuals. Your contribution makes a world of difference.
For 2007, Geeks on Ice is working with the United Way of Greater Moncton and Southeastern NB to help upgrade equipment for several local non-profit agencies with very different needs. We have set a goal to raise $6000 , but I am confident that our group can shatter that benchmark.
Like previous years, we are holding a Rising Stars "Most Charitable Team" contest during the tournament. The contest keeps track of raffle ticket purchases and charitable contributions made by players and fans. Each team will have a United Way scoreboard to report how much was contributed to the United Way. The winning team and raffle winners will be announced at Geekfest on April 21nd. HRDC has won the award for the last 2 years.
To help make fundraising a little bit easier for your organizations, fans and players here is a pledge formwhich you can provide to the United Way staff at the tournament. If you have any questions regarding the pledge sheet or purchase raffle tickets before hand, you can contact the United Way office at (506) 858-8600 or office@moncton.unitedway.ca
The raffle draw is open to the public and the top prize is 2 tickets to the Faith Hill and Tim McGraw Country Rocks the Hill Concert. Tickets are 1 for $2 and 3 for $5
We realize that not everyone can make a monetary contribution, therefore the United Way of Greater Moncton and Southeastern NB is also going to award teams with volunteer services that are offered by team representatives. Several agencies require expertise like database design, network technicians and web designers. If anyone you know is willing to contribute some time to the cause, please contact the United Way office at (506) 858-8600 or office@moncton.unitedway.ca.
For more information on the tournament and fundraiser, visit our website http://www.geeksonice.com/.
Please forward this message to your players and fans. The countdown is on, see you in 15 days!
Cheers,
Trevor Macausland
